Increasing the quality of higher education and the creation of applied geology research center at the University of Arba Minch (Southern Ethiopia, Grant No. 25/2015/03 Czech development Agency (CzDA)
Resolved in: 2015 - 2017
Principal investigator: Mgr. Jan Valenta, Ph.D., IRSM of CAS
To support the Ethiopian government improving conditions for inhabitants and organizations and reduce poverty by own forces are the main developmental goals of the project. This goal shall be reached by advancing the knowledge in fields of Engineering geology, evaluation of geological hazards, applied tectonics and geophysics. Such knowledge will contribute also in protection of environment and sustainable exploitation of natural resources of Ethiopia. The project has an aim to improve efficiency of education at the Arba Minch University (AMU), requested by government. The efficiency can be amended only by increasing the qualification of AMU teachers and employees in the fields of Engineering geology, evaluation of geological hazards, applied tectonics and geophysics. This aim will be supported by creation of research centre and also electronic versions of textbooks and presentations for the lectured expertises. Project will contribute in reduction of poverty, increase of landscape and wildlife protection and efficient and sustainable exploitation of natural resources as well as development of education.

Under the project "Earthquake swarms and their triggering mechanisms in diverse tectonic environments (Bohemian Massif, Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Western Alps)" we set up a seismic network on Reykjanes peninsula in the southeast Iceland. All 15 stations were placed during August/September of 2013 to monitor earthquake activity in this region for at least 2 years.
Measured data allow us to study the seismic source and to compare the seismic activity with other regions of earthquake swarms.
In 2010 we initiated a cooperation with Icelandic Met Office and started a common comparative study of West Bohemian and South Icelandic earthquakes. We analyzed catalogues of over 20 years of observations and we found out that the swarms in West Bohemia and South Iceland are alike.

CzechGeo-MKnet is a part of MKnet seismic network which monitors seismic activity in Male Karpaty region. The pre-2011 MKnet network consisted of 13 stations (red squares and triangles). Three stations were added in 2011 (No. 14-16, green triangles). Station No.23 (green triangle) was added in 2017. A further extension by 6 stations (No. 17-22, purple triangles) is under planning. The yellow, blue and grey circles symbolize earthquakes with magnitude ML > 3, 1 < ML < 3 and ML < 1, respectively. The historical 1906 earthquake of magnitude 5.7 is shown by big yellow star.
Stations No.14 JAL; No.15 BAN; No.16 POD; No. 23 PULA are supported by CzechGeo.
